Assistant Camp Director

Position Purpose:

The Assistant Camp Director is responsible for assisting the Camp Director in furthering the mission of Common Ground Summer Camps through the planning and delivery of program activities, management of the overall camp operation at the direction of the Camp Director.


  • Ensure Counselors’ lesson plans are prepared and implemented to meet camp outcomes and the abilities of the campers.
    • Evaluate program delivery abilities of staff on a regular basis and record appropriately record observations. Providing recommendations and concerns to Camp Director.
    • Evaluate the success of the program and the development of the campers’ abilities and skills in various program activities.
    • Coordinate all camp programs with other staff.
    • Execute schedules and records for all areas of camp program and facilities.
  • Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow security and educational procedures during camp programs.
    • Assist in the implementation of staff training.
    • Assist in providing guidelines for programs utilizing camp equipment.
    • Execute schedules and records for all areas of camp program and facilities.
  • Maintain high standards of health, security, and good judgement in all activities for campers, families, and staff.
    • Assist Counselors and Camp Director with the daily care of each camper including personal/health concerns.
    • Manage the inspection and ensure proper utilization, care, and maintenance of equipment and facilities.
    • Oversee daily checks of area and equipment for security, cleanliness, and good repair.
    • Ensure that program areas are kept free of hazards and debris.
  • Represent Common Ground and be a role model to campers, families, and staff in your attitude and behavior.
    • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules, policies, and procedures; setting a good model to follow for all staff, campers, and families to follow.
    • Provide parents appropriate feedback and information as needed for their campers to have a successful camp experience.

Requirements / Qualifications:

  • Must have prior experience in the camp industry. Multiple years as a camp counselor or leadership role preferred.
  • Must be 18 years of age and demonstrate personal leadership and maturity.
  • Must have a desire and ability to be a role model, lead children in activities, and possess the ability to adjust in the moment.
  • Must have current First Aid/CPR Certification (Provided by Common Ground if needed).
  • Must complete a criminal background check in compliance with state law in a timely manner.
  • Must have a willingness to work outdoors in all types of weather and be able to endure prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, and hiking.
  • Must possess a keen attention to detail and the ability to remain calm and collected while facing stressful situations.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population contributing to a positive and supportive team culture.

Estimated 2019 Seasonal Commitment (Subject to change due to the demands of the season.)
  • Camp Season (June 3 – August 9): 35 – 40 hours/week or as needed after the completion of camp.
