A DAY OF DRUMMING will be a day-long event featuring Jim Donovan (founding member of the multi-platinum group Rusted Root) and a variety of drum workshops taught by diverse instructors for drummers of all experience levels.

WORKSHOPS INCLUDE:
The Rhythm Renewal: focuses on building purpose and connection with others, deepening listening skills, exploring ways to enhance creativity and developing new leadership skills. Experience this groundbreaking program which is helping multitudes of people find new approaches for interpersonal success through the power of group hand- drumming.
Healing Rhythms I: An Introduction to Group Drumming: includes discussions on types of group drumming, benefits of group drumming, rhythmic concepts, and resources available. Presenter will introduce various hand drums and techniques to play them. Participants will also engage in simple rhythm based activities that will reinforce materials presented in a lecture format.
Beginner's Frame Drum Workshop: Learn the basic techniques for playing the fram drum, an ancient ceremonial instrument used in cultures around the world. This workshop will focus on the ability of the drum to synchronize and balance the mind, body, and spirit. You will be introduced to several fram drums- the tar, riq, and bodhran- and learn their many beautiful tones, history, and traditional rhythms.
Ivory Coast Style Djembe Workshop: Learn basic rhythms from the Ivory Coast of West Africa. Suitable for everyone, beginners to advanced.
Clave- The Key Rhythm: Clave is both an instrument and a specific rhythm, but most importantly it is the key to understanding complex Latin and African rhythms. We will learn variations of the Clave rhythm using movement and clapping which will help internalize the rhythms into our bodies.
Introduction to Journeying Through Drumming: Journeying is an ancient technique used by many indigenous cultures throughout the world to access healing and spiritual realms. A specific drum tempo is utilized to bring the brain to a theta state. This state, most often associated with sleeping and dreaming, provides participants an opportunity for deep relaxation, profound insight and healing.
FACULTY INCLUDES:
Jim Donovan- is a current and founding member of the multi-platinum band Rusted Root. Jim has released 3 solo CDs as well as 4 instructional drumming CDs. Jim has also recorded with Triloka recording artist Krishna Das on his highly acclaimed CD "Live on Earth." Jim is a featured columnist in Drum! Magazine, the world's number one drumming magazine. Jim was nominated for "Best Rock Pop Percussionist" in the 2004 Drum! Magazine Readers poll.
Ed Boas- has been a drummer for most of his life. He has had formal training in classical percussion; drum corps, and jazz drumming. Most recently he has concentrated on World Percussion and Drum Circle Facilitation. Ed currently consults to businesses and organizations using drumming as a way to strengthen teams, build cohesion, and enhance creativity.
Sogbety Diomande- was born in the village of Toufinga, a small farming community located in the Northwest region of the Ivory Coast near the board of Guinea in Africa. He started his career as a drummer and dancer at a very early age. Sogbety has been stilt dancing since the age of ten and possesses the ability, through his stilt mask, to act as a mediator between the world of the living and the spirtiual world of the ancestors.
Toni Kellar- has studied frame drums with Glen Velez, Layne Redmond, and Randy Crafton, and has shared the stage with all three. Toni is the director of Roots to Rhythm: Interactive Development Programs & Rhythm Events. She has been a percussionist since her youth, and currently peformed with Groove Project.
Harry Pepper- is a psychologist and the Adult Program Coordinator at Common Ground- The Cindy Nord Center for Renewal. He is an experienced presenter on a wide range of topics including holisitc and alternative healing approaches. Harry has been drumming for more than thirty years.
Rex Bacon- recieved his B.A. in Music Therapy from the University of Dayton in 1997. A full- time music therapist, Rex has worked in various health care settings, churches, hospitals, prisions, and schools. He combines creative drumming techniques with warmth and humor, enhancing the feelings of wellness and community within each circle he facilitiates.
Audrey Kolb- recently moved to Ohio from California where she took lessons, for more than seven years, from the famous Middle Eastern teacher and performer, Maryellen Donald. She plays the doumbec, tar, bendir, riqq, djembe, and finger cymbals. She has performed on stage, in concert, and in night clubs in California.
